I. UNDERSTANDING OXIDATIVE STRESS

What Is Oxidative Stress?

Every second of every day, your body is producing energy.

Inside nearly every cell, tiny structures called mitochondria convert nutrients from food into the energy that powers movement, thinking, digestion, healing, and countless other biological processes.

This process is remarkably efficient.

However, like any system that generates energy, it also produces byproducts.

Among these are molecules known as reactive oxygen species, often called free radicals.

Free radicals are not inherently harmful.

In fact, they play important roles in normal immune function, cellular communication, and defense against harmful microorganisms.

Problems arise when their production consistently exceeds the body’s ability to neutralize them.

This imbalance is known as oxidative stress.

Over time, excessive oxidative stress may contribute to changes in proteins, fats, DNA, and other cellular structures.

These changes are considered one of several biological processes associated with aging.
