Cortisol Isn’t The Enemy
Cortisol has developed a bad reputation in the wellness world.
But you need cortisol.
It’s a glucocorticoid hormone produced by your adrenal glands and is involved in your stress response, metabolism, immune activity, blood pressure, and daily sleep-wake rhythm.
Under normal circumstances, cortisol follows a daily pattern.

Natural morning light provides your brain with an important signal that daytime has begun.
Then move your body.
Even a short walk can combine light exposure, physical activity, and stress reduction.
Drink some water.
Eat a balanced breakfast if you’re hungry.
And if possible, avoid beginning every morning by immediately checking stressful emails, social media, or news.
You’re giving your nervous system a very different introduction to the day.
Don’t Try To Eliminate Cortisol
This is important.
The goal isn’t to have the lowest cortisol possible.
You need cortisol.
You want cortisol to rise when appropriate and decline when it’s no longer needed.
Instead of obsessing over “lowering cortisol,” focus on building a healthier daily rhythm.
That includes:
Consistent sleep
Morning sunlight
Regular movement
Resistance training
Balanced meals
Adequate protein and fiber
Time outdoors
Relaxation
Social connection
Less sitting
Recovery between stressful periods
None of these individually “fixes” cortisol.
Together, they create an environment that supports healthier stress and metabolic regulation.
Blood Sugar Is About More Than Sugar
This may be the biggest takeaway.
Blood glucose isn’t controlled by food alone.
Your liver matters.
Your muscles matter.
Your pancreas matters.
Your sleep matters.
Your activity matters.
And your stress response matters.
That’s why two people can eat the exact same meal and experience different glucose responses.
It’s also why the same person may respond differently to the same meal after a restful night compared with a stressful, sleep-deprived one.

Cortisol isn’t inherently bad.

Both are essential parts of human physiology.
When you’re stressed, cortisol and other stress hormones help make glucose available so your brain and body have access to energy.
Your liver can even manufacture glucose when you haven’t eaten.
For occasional stress, this is exactly what your body was designed to do.
But when stress becomes chronic, sleep becomes inconsistent, physical activity declines, and recovery disappears, the same survival system can begin working against long-term metabolic health.
So don’t think about blood sugar only when you’re deciding what to eat.
Think about how you sleep.
Think about how often you move.
Think about how much muscle you maintain.
Think about how much time you spend sitting.
And think about whether your body ever gets a chance to come out of stress mode.
